SYMPTOMS
After you turn off the Automatic Updates service, and then you install Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 (SP4), the Automatic Updates service may be unexpectedly turned back on.
CAUSE
This issue occurs if you turn off the Automatic Updates service by setting the startup type to Disabled in the Services tool in Control Panel.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, turn off the Automatic Updates service by using the Automatic Updates tool in Control Panel. When you turn off Automatic Updates by using this method, the Automatic Updates service is not turned back on when you install Windows 2000 SP4. To turn off Automatic Updates, follow these steps:
- Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
- Double-click Automatic Updates.
- Click to clear the Keep my computer up to date check box, click Apply, and then click OK.
Note If the items in the Automatic Updates dialog box are unavailable (appear dimmed), Group Policy settings may be configured to prevent access to these items.

Microsoft recommends that you use the Automatic Updates tool in Control Panel to turn on or to turn off the Automatic Updates service. When you turn off the Automatic Updates service by setting its startup type to Disabled in the Services tool, Windows 2000 SP4 Setup turns Automatic Updates back on. However, when you turn off the Automatic Updates service by using the Automatic Updates tool, Windows 2000 SP4 Setup does not turn Automatic Updates back on for the computer.
