The Virtual PC program emulates an Ethernet network adapter in the guest PC environment. Because of this, operating systems that you install in the guest PC detect an Ethernet network adapter even if the host computer contains a network adapter that is not an Ethernet adapter. Virtual PC provides the following two methods to integrate the guest PC networking environment and the host computer networking environment:
- Shared Networking (NAT)
This networking method works at the Transport Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) level and is compatible with any TCP/IP host networking connection. If you use the guest PC operating system to run programs that use TCP/IP protocols, you can use the Shared Networking (NAT) networking method. This networking method supports the installation of a Token Ring network adapter in the host computer.
- Virtual Switch
This networking method works at the Ethernet networking level and provides a bridge between the emulated Ethernet adapter in the guest PC and the physical Ethernet adapter in the host computer. If you want to run your guest PC operating system as a server, or if you require networking protocols that are not based on TCP/IP (such as IPX/SPX or NetBEUI), you can use the Virtual Switch networking method. This networking method requires the installation of an Ethernet network adapter in the host computer and does not support Token Ring network adapters.
