APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Virtual PC for Mac Version 6.1
  • Connectix Virtual PC for Mac 6.0
  • Connectix Virtual PC for Mac 5.0

SYMPTOMS

When you start a virtual machine, your Macintosh computer may experience a kernel panic.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the following conditions are true:

  • The Macintosh computer uses an Apple AirPort network adapter to wirelessly connect to the network.
  • The virtual machine is using Virtual Switch.
  • The Macintosh computer runs Apple Mac OS X 10.1.2.

RESOLUTION

Update the Macintosh Computer's Operating System

To resolve this problem, Microsoft recommends that you update your Macintosh computer's operating system from Mac OS X version 10.1.2 to version 10.1.5. You can download Apple Mac OS X Combo Update 10.1.5 from the following Apple Web site:

Use Shared Networking

You can also resolve this problem by using Shared Networking instead of using Virtual Switch. To set up Shared Networking, follow these steps:

  1. Start Virtual PC.
  2. On the Virtual PC List, click the virtual machine that you want to configure.
  3. Click Settings.
  4. Click Networking.
  5. Click to select the Enable networking check box.
  6. Click Shared Networking.
  7. Click OK.

If you must use Virtual Switch for network connectivity, you cannot use your AirPort network adapter. You must connect directly to your network through an Ethernet cable connection.

If you use Apple Mac OS X versions 10.1 and 10.1.1, it is doubtful that you would experience this problem.
