SYMPTOMS

When you shut down and restart your computer without using the correct shutdown procedures, or when you shut down and restart your computer after a power management recovery, you may not be able to establish a network connection between two computers with an IEEE 1394 cable.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because Windows XP does not correctly handle the disconnection of the media.

RESOLUTION

Service pack information

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Windows XP service pack that contains this hotfix.

The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in coordinated universal time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, remove the network bridge from the computer where the problem occurred or restart the computer. To remove the network bridge, follow these steps:

  1. Log on as an administrator or as a member of the Administrators group.
  2. Click Start, click Control Panel, click Network and Internet Connections, and then click Network Connections.
  3. Under Network Bridge, right-click Network Bridge, and then click Delete.

Notes

  • If your computer is connected to a network, network policy settings may prevent you from completing this procedure.
  • If you remove network adapters from the network bridge, and only one network adapter remains, the network bridge cannot work but continues to use resources.
  • If you remove the network bridge, computers on your network cannot communicate with computers that are on different network segments. Some of the computers on your network may lose Internet connectivity.
  • Internet Connection Sharing, Internet Connection Firewall, Discovery and Control, and Network Bridge are not available on Windows XP 64-Bit Edition.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2.
