SYMPTOMS

When you try to assign a joystick for game play in Flight Simulator 2000, the joystick description may contain non-text characters. Additionally, the joystick may not respond to movement or to button press commands during game play.

RESOLUTION

Step 1: Reset the Default Action Assignments for the Joystick Buttons and the Axes

To reset the default actions that are assigned to the buttons and to the axes of the joystick, follow these steps:

  1. Start a new flight in Flight Simulator 2000.
  2. On the Options menu, point to Controls, and then click Assignments.
  3. Click the Buttons/Keys tab.
  4. In the Joystick type box, click the joystick that you want to use, and then click Reset Defaults.
  5. Click the Joystick axes tab.
  6. In the Joystick type box, click the joystick that you want to use, and then click Reset Defaults.
  7. To verify that the default events are selected for your four-axis joystick, verify that the Axis settings for each Event match the settings in the following table:

    Event Axis
    Elevator axis Axis 02
    Ailerons axis Axis 01
    Rudder axis Axis 04
    Throttle axis Axis 03

If the default events do not match this, continue to the next method to assign the default events manually.

Step 2: Manually Assign Actions for the Joystick Buttons and Axes

To manually assign an action to a button or to an axis on your joystick, follow these steps:

  1. Start a new flight in Flight Simulator 2000.
  2. On the Options menu, point to Controls, and then click Assignments.
  3. To assign events to the buttons on your joystick, click the Buttons/Keys tab.

To assign events to the axes on your joystick, click the Joystick axes tab.

  1. In the Joystick type box, click the joystick that you want to use.
  2. Under the Event column, click the line for an event that you want to assign to a button or to an axis on your joystick, and then click Change assignment.
  3. On the joystick, press the button or move the axis that you want to use for the selected action.

If you receive a warning message that a different action is already assigned to the joystick button or to the axis, click the green check mark to accept the new assignment or click Clear to edit a different button.

  1. When you finish manually assigning events to the buttons and to the axes on your joystick, click the green check mark to save your changes and exit.

If the issue continues to occur, continue to the next step.
