This article describes the Microsoft Office XP Italian Proofing Tools issue that is fixed in the Office XP Italian Proofing Tools Post-Service Pack 2 hotfix package that is dated July 25, 2003.

Issues That Are Fixed in the Hotfix Package

The following issue is fixed in this hotfix package but was not previously documented in a Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

When you type certain words in an Italian language Microsoft Word document, you may receive the following error message and Word quits unexpectedly:

Microsoft Word has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

If you click to view the details of the error message, you receive an error signature that is similar to the following:

For the Italian and Office XP Multilingual User Interface versions of this hotfix, the following prerequisites apply.

The optimized version of this hotfix is a post-Office XP Service Pack 2 (SP-2) hotfix. To install the hotfix, you must have Office XP SP-2 installed.

The optimized version of this hotfix requires Microsoft Windows Installer 2.0 or later.

The full-file version of this hotfix is also the administrative version of this hotfix. You can install this version of the hotfix with Office XP Service Pack 1 (SP-1). However, Microsoft has not tested this fix on Office XP SP-1 to the same extent as on Office XP Service Pack 2 (SP-2). If you install this hotfix on a computer with Office XP SP-1 installed, some file conflicts might occur. Microsoft supports this configuration, but Microsoft does not recommend this configuration.
If the user has either the Office XP Language Pack installed Service Pack 1 (SP-1) or the Office XP Language Pack Service Pack 2 ( SP-2) installed, the language packs must be installed before you can apply these hotfixes. If SP-1 and SP-2 for the Office XP Language Packs are not installed, the user will receive the following error message:

The upgrade patch cannot be installed by the Windows Installer service because the program to be upgraded may be missing, or the upgrade patch may update a different version of the probram. Verify tha the program to be upgraded exists on your computer and that you have the correct upgrade patch.
