SYMPTOMS
When you try to use the runas secondary logon command together with both the /smartcard and the /savecred switches, the computer stops responding.
CAUSE
This problem occurs because of an access violation in the Secondary Logon service. This problem occurs when both the following conditions exist:
- You type the runas command together with both the /smartcard and the /savecred switches.
-and-
- You do not specify other user credentials in the runas command.
For example, if you type a command that is similar to the following, the computer stops responding:
runas /smartcard /savecred cmd.exe
However, if you enter a command that is similar to the following, the command works as you expect:
runas /smartcard /savecred /user:user@contoso.com
cmd.exe

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2.
