SYMPTOMS
When you open a Microsoft Word 6.0/95 Traditional Chinese document in Microsoft Word 2002, quotation marks may be displayed as different characters (not quotation marks).
CAUSE
This problem may occur if the "Straight quotes" with "Smart quotes" option is turned on.
RESOLUTION

Part 2: Activate the Fix
WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
To activate this fix, follow these steps:
- Quit Word.
- Click Start, and then click Run.
- In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
- Locate, and then click to select the following registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Word\Options
- With the preceding key selected, on the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD.
- Type EnsureEmitSmartQuote, and then press ENTER.
- Right-click EnsureEmitSmartQuote, and then click Modify.
- In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
- On the File menu, click Exit to quit Registry Editor.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Office XP Service Pack 3.
