You receive a "Cannot generate SSPI context" error message when you access SharePoint Portal Server 2003 central administration

SYMPTOMS

When you try to access the SharePoint Portal Server Central Administration page, you may receive the following error message:

Error
Cannot generate SSPI context.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if the password of the user account that is specified as the CentralAdminAppPool application pool identity in Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) 6.0 is incorrect.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, specify the correct password for the CentralAdminAppPool application pool identity in IIS. To do so, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.
  2. Expand ServerName, and then expand Application Pools.
  3. Right-click CentralAdminAppPool, and then click Properties.
  4. Click the Identity tab.
  5. In the Password box, type the correct password of the application pool account that appears in the User name box, and then click OK.
  6. In the Confirm Password dialog box, type the password again, and then click OK.
