Article ID: 823376

Article Last Modified on 1/9/2007

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003
  • Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services

SYMPTOMS

When you use the Microsoft SharePoint Migration Tool (Smigrate.exe) to back up a SharePoint Team Services site in preparation to migrate it to a Windows SharePoint Services site, you may receive an error message that is similar to the following:

The server administration programs and the server extensions on the Web server are not compatible. The server is too old to use with this administration program. Please consult the section in the Administration Guide on Migrating and Updating Web Sites for more information

CAUSE

This issue occurs if the Ows1002.exe update for SharePoint Team Services is not installed on the SharePoint Team Services server.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, install the Ows1002.exe update on the SharePoint Team Services server before you migrate your site to Windows SharePoint Services. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Install Microsoft Office XP Service Pack 1 (SP-1) and Microsoft Office XP Service Pack 2 (SP-2) (if they are not already installed on the server). To do so, visit the following Microsoft Office Product Updates Web site: Note Office XP SP-1 and Office XP SP-2 must be installed on the server before you install the Owa1002.exe update in step 2.
  2. Download the following SharePoint Team Services update, install it on the SharePoint Team Services server, and then use the Smigrate.exe tool to migrate the SharePoint Team Services site to a Windows SharePoint Services site.

The following files are available for download from the Microsoft Download Center:

MORE INFORMATION

The Smigrate.exe tool is located in the Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\60\Bin folder on the server. Use the Smigrate.exe tool to back up SharePoint Team Services sites or Windows SharePoint Services sites, and restore these backups to other servers running Windows SharePoint Services. When you use the Smigrate.exe tool, you must perform two separate operations. First, you back up the site to a file, and then you restore the site to the new location. For more information about the Smigrate.exe tool, see the "Migrating and Upgrading Web Sites" topic in the Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Administration Guide. The Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Administration Guide is located in the Docs folder in the root folder of the Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 CD-ROM.
