SYMPTOMS
Managed applications that target the .NET Framework 1.1 and that use sockets when they communicate with HTTP 1.1 servers (for example, with Internet Information Services 6.0) open a new socket if the server sends an HTTP 304 ("not modified") response header with the Content Length: 0.
This behavior may cause application overload when the application can use the same socket that it initially used to communicate with the server.
RESOLUTION
A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This fix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next .NET Framework service pack that contains this hotfix.
