You cannot restore databases to the original server when you use the SharePoint Portal Server Data Backup and Restore tool

Article ID: 823267

Article Last Modified on 5/31/2007

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003

SYMPTOMS

When you use the SharePoint Portal Server Data Backup and Restore tool to back up and restore portal data in a server farm deployment of SharePoint Portal Server, you may find that you cannot restore databases to the original server. There is not an option in the SharePoint Portal Server Data Backup and Restore tool to do so. However, you can use the SharePoint Portal Server Data Backup and Restore tool to restore databases to other servers in the server farm.

For example, if you back up portal data in a server farm deployment of SharePoint Portal Server that has one database server, and you add a content database server and a component database server, there is not an option in the SharePoint Portal Server Data Backup and Restore tool to restore databases from the backup to the original server. However, you can restore databases from the backup to either of the two database servers that you later added to your server farm.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, provision a non-configuration database on the original server, and then restore the databases to the servers that you want in the server farm.

MORE INFORMATION

You can back up and restore a server farm, a portal, or individual components of a SharePoint Portal Server deployment by using the SharePoint Portal Server Data Backup and Restore tool. You must run the SharePoint Portal Server Data Backup and Restore tool from a front-end Web server in the server farm.

For more information about how to back up and restore SharePoint Portal Server data, see the "Backup and Restore" topic in the Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Administration Guide. The Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Administration Guide is located in the Docs folder in the root folder of the Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 CD-ROM.
