SYMPTOMS
After you upgrade to Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM) 2000 Service Pack 1 (SP1), you may receive MOM 2000 mail alerts as empty plain text messages with a Rich Text Format (RTF) attachment. These attachments may contain corrupted text or the attachments may not open.
CAUSE
By default, MOM 2000 SP1 mail alerts are sent in RTF (character set UTF-8). Some third-party mail server products may not be able to process RTF messages. The original release version of MOM 2000 sends mail alerts in plain text format (character set Windows-1252).
RESOLUTION
Hotfix information
A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next MOM 2000 service pack that contains this hotfix.

This hotfix adds a registry key. With this registry key, you can configure the character set for MOM 2000 mail alerts as plain text (Windows-1252). To add this registry key, follow these steps:
- Click Start, and then click Run.
- Type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
- Locate and then right-click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Mission Critical Software\OnePoint
- Point to New, and then click DWORD value.
- Type UseWindows1252CharSet for the value name, and then press ENTER to accept the name.
- Double-click the UseWindows1252CharSet value.
- Type 1 for the Value data.
- Click OK, and then quit Registry Editor.
- Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Services.
- Right-click OnePoint service, and then click Stop.
- Right-click OnePoint service, and then click Start.
