SYMPTOMS

The performance of a Microsoft Windows 2000-based domain controller may decrease significantly, response times to service principal name (SPN) queries may become longer that expected, and Lsass.exe may peak at 100-percent CPU use.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when the domain controller receives many Kerberos ticket-granting service (TGS) requests for an SPN that is a subset of a common value. A typical example is the case of the names of all client computers in a domain having the same prefix as the name of the domain where they are members. They register an SPN of the following:

HOST/DomainName Suffix

If a Kerberos TGS request for HOST/DomainName is issued against a domain controller, a query that uses "HOST/DomainName*" is performed instead of a query that uses the exact match of "HOST/DomainName". This problem may occur in environments with many workstations, where this naming convention is in use.
