SYMPTOMS

When you use a drag-and-drop operation to move an icon on your desktop, you find that the visual effects do not work correctly. For example, when you drag a desktop icon, the translucent representation of the icon does not follow the mouse pointer. Instead, the icon remains opaque and stationary while you drag the icon, and then the icon reappears in the new location when you release the mouse button.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if both of the following conditions are true:

  • You are using Microsoft Windows XP with Service Pack 1.
  • You have installed a fix that is described in any one of the following Microsoft Knowledge Base articles:

    814135 Incorrect ToolTip text is displayed

    814789 Windows stops responding with "Stop error 0x7F" error message

    817611 A minimized program window that is hung (is not responding) may not be restored correctly and a second minimized window appears

    815304 The computer does not return from hibernation correctly


RESOLUTION

Service pack information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2.
