SYMPTOMS

Your Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server computer may intermittently stop transferring messages. When you troubleshoot this problem, you may experience all the following symptoms:

  • Event ID 9405 appears in the application log of Event Viewer.
  • The MSExchangeMTA service does not quit. The Emsmta.exe process still appears in the list of running processes in Task Manager.
  • If you restart the MSExchangeMTA service, the Exchange server transfers messages again.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because of an access violation in the message transfer agent (MTA). The access violation occurs because the MTA process tries to dereference an object that is already dereferenced (or freed).
