Public folder data is removed during the database maintenance process after you restore your public folder store from backup and reconfigure public folder age limits

Article ID: 821332

Article Last Modified on 10/26/2006

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Standard Edition

SYMPTOMS

After you restore your Exchange 2000 public folder store from a backup, when the Exchange database maintenance process runs, the information that is in the public folders is removed. This problem occurs even though you have changed the age limit for all the folders in the public folder store to make sure that messages are not automatically removed during the online database maintenance process.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if all the following conditions exist:

  • You set the age limits for the folders that are in a public folder store.
  • You back up the public folder store database(s).
  • You let the database maintenance process run, and that process removes all the messages that are in the public folders.
  • You restore the public folder store from the backup.
  • You set the age limits for the folders that are in the public folder store to a higher value, or you click to clear the Age limit for all folders in this store (days) check box.
  • You let the database maintenance process run.

This problem occurs because during the online database maintenance process, the age limits of certain items that are inside the replication table are taken into account before they become updated by the new age limit settings. Because of this behavior, all the data that is in the public folder is removed.
