WD: Converted WinWord Graphic Objects Print Black in MacWord

Q82126

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, version 5.0
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 1.0, 1.1, 1.1a, 2.0, 2.0a, 2.0a-CD, 2.0b, 2.0c

SYMPTOMS

When you convert a document from Word 1.x or 2.0 for Windows to Word 5.0 for the Macintosh and the document contains one or more graphics images with enclosed regions (for example, boxes, the enclosed regions of the letters "o" or "d," or any other enclosed polygon), those graphics objects are filled in black when printed to a PostScript printer. On Macintosh systems with a monochrome monitor, such images will also be filled in black when displayed. On color monitors, the images are displayed correctly, but are still filled in black when printed.

This problem may occur with graphics originally imported into Word for Windows from an external format such as EPS, TIFF, WPG, and so on; images copied from the Windows Clipboard; or embedded OLE images from Microsoft Graph, Draw, WordArt, or other applications that support the OLE protocol.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem in your printed output, change the Print field option from Black & White to Color/Grayscale in the Print dialog box before printing from Word 5.0 for the Macintosh.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Windows Metafile external converter supplied with Word 5.0 for the Macintosh. This problem was corrected in Word 5.1 for the Macintosh.
