Users receive duplicate messages

SYMPTOMS

E-mail messages that are sent to users and distribution groups are delivered in duplicate.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if both of the following conditions are true:

The e-mail message is addressed to a distribution group and to a recipient who is a member of that distribution group
The message is addressed to a distribution group that is expanded externally (beyond its own routing group). For example, the message is sent from a Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server mailbox to a distribution group that is expanded to an organization that is using Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5.

This problem may also occur if the original message requires content conversion. For example, the problem may occur if the local recipient has their default message format set to the Rich Text Format (RTF) but the distribution group has its default message format set to plain text.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server service pack that contains this hotfix.
