SUMMARY

Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server 2001 is not supported on Microsoft Windows Server 2003. This policy is effective regardless of whether SharePoint Portal Server 2001 is installed after you install Windows Server 2003, or you upgrade an existing Microsoft Windows 2000 Server installation where SharePoint Portal Server 2001 is already installed.

MORE INFORMATION

When you upgrade to Windows Server 2003, a compatibility check is performed. If an installation of SharePoint Portal Server is found, you receive a warning message that the installation is not supported.

Note If you have a service pack installed that is later than Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server 2001 Service Pack 1 (for example, Service Pack 2, Service Pack 2a, or later), the compatibility check does not detect your SharePoint Portal Server 2001 installation and you do not receive the warning message.

SharePoint Portal Server 2001 will not function on Windows Server 2003 because of incompatibilities between the versions of the Microsoft Web Storage System and Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) 6. There are currently no plans to release an update to the Web Storage System in SharePoint Portal Server 2001 to make it compatible with Windows Server 2003.

Important If you upgrade to Windows Server 2003 and SharePoint Portal Server 2001 is present (as in an upgrade scenario from Windows 2000 Server), you are likely to experience all the following behaviors:

  • SharePoint Portal Server 2001 does not function.

-and-

  • Stored data on SharePoint Portal Server 2001 is not accessible.

-and-

  • You may not be able to successfully remove SharePoint Portal Server 2001.
