User Profile Folder Names Are Corrupted When You Log on to a Server by Using a Web Interface

Article ID: 819410

Article Last Modified on 10/30/2006

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 3

SYMPTOMS

When you log on to a Windows 2000-based computer by using a Web interface, such as the Web User Interface that is provided by Microsoft Server Appliance Kit 2.01, the name of the folder that is created for your user profile in the Documents and Settings folder may be corrupted.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the Multilingual User Interface Pack (MUI) is installed on the Windows 2000 Server-based computer. For example, if the MUI language is set to Japanese, the folder name may contain various Kanji (Japanese text) and symbol characters instead of exactly matching your user name.

This problem has been known to occur after the installation of Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 (SP3) and after the installation of the Windows 2000 hotfix that is discussed in the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

287917 WMI Registry Provider Does Not Support UNICODE

Note Although the folder name cannot be easily typed (this affects management tasks, for example), the folder otherwise functions without a problem.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Microsoft Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 4.
