SYMPTOMS
When you try to use a previously installed removable storage device (for example, a removable CD-ROM drive for a portable computer), the device does not work. When you view the properties for the problem device in Device Manager, you receive the following message:
CAUSE
This problem may occur when you:
- Install a new removable storage device (for example, a memory card, a PC Card storage device, or a USB storage device).
- Remove the previously-installed removable storage device from the computer.
- Reinsert the previously-installed removable storage device.
When this sequence of events occurs, Windows 2000 may not clean up a reference to the removed device. This prevents the device from being enumerated and configured correctly when it is reinserted.
