SYMPTOMS

When you start one of the Microsoft Office 2000 programs that are listed at the beginning of this article after April 15, 2003, you may receive a prompt to register Office. This symptom may occur if Office has previously been registered or if the version of Office that you are using does not typically require registration.

When you receive a prompt to register Office, the prompt may be voluntary or mandatory. You may receive either of the following types of registration prompts.

Voluntary Registration

When you start your Office program, you receive a prompt to register your Microsoft Office product with a Yes or No dialog box.

  • If you click Yes, the Office Registration Wizard starts.
  • If you click No, the Office Registration Wizard does not start and your Office program functions as expected.


If you have administrative credentials on the computer and you select not to register, you do not receive a prompt to register again.

Mandatory Registration

When you start your Office program, the Office Registration Wizard starts automatically. You must have administrative credentials on the computer and you must continue through the Office Registration Wizard to register Office. If you do not complete the Office Registration Wizard, or you click Register Later, you receive a prompt from the Office Registration Wizard to register Office every time you start your Office program. After you receive a prompt to register Office 50 times, you must register to continue using the product.

RESOLUTION

To help resolve this issue, download and install the appropriate patch for your version of Office.


Use this patch if the Office program that you are patching has Microsoft Office Service Pack 3 (SP-3) installed.


Use this patch if the Office program that you are patching has Microsoft Office 2000 Service Release 1 (SR-1) or Microsoft Office 2000 Service Pack 2 (SP-2) installed.


Patch Installation Instructions (Office SP-3 Versions)

Prerequisites

Before you install this update, make sure that the following requirements have been met:

  • To install the client or full-file version of this patch, you must have Office 2000 SP-3 installed. For additional information about Office 2000 SP-3, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

  • The client version of this patch requires Windows Installer 2.0 or later. For additional information about this requirement, see the "Windows Installer Update Requirements" section of this article.

How to Install the Optimized Client Version of the Patch

To download and install the optimized client patch:

  1. Visit the following Microsoft Web site:
  2. Click Save to save the KB818798.exe file to the selected folder.
  3. In Windows Explorer, double-click the KB818798.exe file.
  4. If you are prompted to install the update, click Yes.
  5. Click Yes to accept the License Agreement.
  6. Insert your Office 2000 CD-ROM when you are prompted to do so, and then click OK.
  7. When you receive a message that indicates that the installation was successful, click OK.

Note After you install the patch, you cannot remove it. To revert to an installation before the patch was installed, you must remove Office 2000, and then install it again from the original CD-ROM.

How to Install the Full-File Version of the Patch

If you installed your Office 2000 product from a server location, the server administrator must update the server location with the full-file version of the patch and deploy that update to your computer.

If you are the server administrator, download the administrative update:

  1. Visit the following Microsoft Web site:
  2. Click Save to save the KB818798a.exe file to the selected folder.
  3. In Windows Explorer, double-click the KB818798a.exe file.
  4. Click Yes to accept the License Agreement.
  5. In the Type the location where you want to put the extracted files box, type c:\kb818798a, and then click OK.
  6. Click Yes when you are prompted to create the folder.
  7. If you are familiar with the procedure for updating your administrative installation, click Start, and then click Run. In the Open box, type the following command:

    msiexec /a Admin Path\MSI File /p C:\KB818798a\MSP File SHORTFILENAMES=TRUE

    In this command, Admin Path is the path of your administrative installation point for Office 2000 (for example, C:\Office2000), MSI File is the .msi database package for the Office 2000 product (for example, Data1.msi), and MSP File is the name of the administrative update (for example, MSO9ff.msp).

    Note You can append /qb+ to the command line so that the Office 2000 Administrative Installation dialog box and the End User License Agreement dialog box do not appear.
  8. To deploy the update to the client workstations, click Start, and then click Run. In the Open box, type the following command:

    msiexec /i Admin Path\MSI File REINSTALL=Feature List REINSTALLMODE=vomu

    In this command, Admin Path is the path of your administrative installation point for Office 2000 (for example, C:\Office2000), MSI File is the MSI database package for the Office 2000 product (for example, Data1.msi), and Feature List is the list of feature names (case sensitive) that have to be reinstalled for the update. To install all features, you can use the REINSTALL=ALL option, or you can install the following features:

    • ProductFiles

Patch Installation Instructions (Office 2000 SR-1 or Office 2000 SP-2 Versions)

Note Installing the client or administrative version of the patch described in this article on a computer that has Microsoft Office 2000 Service Release 1 (SR-1) installed, will not enable the security features included in later Office 2000 service packs (for example, Microsoft Office SP-2.)

How to Install the Client Version of the Patch

To download and install the client patch:

  1. Visit the following Microsoft Web site:
  2. Click Save to save the KB818798_SR1.exe file to the selected folder.
  3. In Windows Explorer, double-click the KB818798_SR1.exe file.
  4. If you are prompted to install the update, click Yes.
  5. Click Yes to accept the License Agreement.
  6. Insert your Office 2000 CD-ROM when you are prompted to do so, and then click OK.
  7. When you receive a message that indicates that the installation was successful, click OK.

How to Determine If the Patch Is Installed (All Versions)

The patch contains an updated version of the following file:

   File name   Version

The following steps describe how to determine the version of the MSO9.dll file that is installed on your computer.

Note Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.

  1. Click Start, and then click Search.
  2. In the Search Results pane, click All files and folders under Search Companion.
  3. In the All or part of the file name box, type Mso9.dll, and then click Search.
  4. In the list of files, right-click the MSO9.dll file, and then click Properties.
  5. On the Version tab, determine the version of the file.

Note If the patch is already installed on your computer, you receive the following error message when you try to install the patch:

This update has already been applied or is included in an update that has already been applied.

Windows Installer Update Requirements

Some of the patches that this article describes require Windows Installer 1.1 or Windows Installer 2.0. Both Microsoft Windows XP and Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 (SP3) include Windows Installer 2.0 or later.
