Office Web Components 2002 Are Unexpectedly In Reduced Functionality Mode

Article ID: 817785

Article Last Modified on 4/7/2006

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Office Web Components

SYMPTOMS

When you use an Office Web Component in a Microsoft Office XP program, the Office Web Component may be in a reduced functionality state and you cannot use the component.

For example, in Microsoft Access 2002, if you use Pivot Table View, the Select Query dialog box may be blank so you cannot drag the Pivot Table fields to the appropriate areas of the Select Query dialog box.

CAUSE

This problem may occur for one of the following two reasons:

  • The hardware signature file (*.dhs) is missing.
  • The hardware signature file does not match the current hardware configuration on the computer.

RESOLUTION

When the hardware signature file is missing, the Activation Wizard must be completed before the components are fully functional. The Activation Wizard does require access to the source media.

When the hardware signature file does not match the current hardware configuration, the hardware signature must be rebuilt on the computer. If you are using an Enterprise version of Office XP with a Volume License product key, the following supported fix is available to allow the Office Web Components to be fully functional even if the hardware signature does not match the current configuration.

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This fix may receive additional testing to further ensure product quality. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Office XP service pack that contains this fix.

To resolve this problem immediately, contact Microsoft Product Support Services to obtain the fix. For a complete list of Microsoft Product Support Services phone numbers and information about support costs, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

Note In special cases, charges that are ordinarily incurred for support calls may be canceled if a Microsoft Support Professional determines that a specific update will resolve your problem. The usual support costs will apply to additional support questions and issues that do not qualify for the specific update in question.

The global version of this fix has the file attributes (or later) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in coordinated universal time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.

   Date Time Size File name
   -------------------------------------------
   12-Nov-2002 23:33 2,749,972 Owc10.msp
   13-Nov-2002 06:26 11,175,968 Owc10ff.msp

After the hotfix is installed, the following files will have the listed attributes or later:

Date Time Version Size File name
   -----------------------------------------------------
   08-Nov-2002 18:46 10.0.4705.0 7,322,696 Owc10.dll

This fix is a post-Office XP Service Pack 2 (SP-2) fix. To install the fix, you must have Office XP SP-2 installed. For additional information about Office XP SP-2, click the following article number to see the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Additionally, you may have to install Windows Installer 2.0 to install this fix. For additional information about the Windows Installer requirement for post-Office XP SP-2 fixes, click the following article number to see the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

WORKAROUND

If you are not using an Enterprise version of Office XP with a Volume License product key, you cannot use the hotfix described in the "Resolution" section of this article. Instead, you must rebuild the hardware signature file on your computer.

To rebuild the hardware signature file, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type one of the following commands, and then click OK:
    • Msiexec /i productcode /qb RESIGNDPC=1

Where productcode is the product code for the installed Office XP product.

For additional information about the product code, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

302663 OFFXP: Numbering Scheme for Product Code GUIDs

      -or-
    • Msiexec /i path\msi name /qb RESIGNDPC=1

Where path\msi name is the path and .msi file name for the installed Office XP product.

STATUS
