SYMPTOMS

In a Microsoft Visual J# project, when you try to open a new socket connection and try to connect to a back end server through a virtual private network (VPN) connection, you may receive a java.net.NoRouteToHostException error. You can open the socket connection and connect to the server when you do not use a VPN connection.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that this article describes. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.
