SYMPTOMS

After you install Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 (SP 3) on your Windows 2000-based computer, you may receive the following error message each time that you print to a printer over an infrared port:

There was an error found when printing the document DocumentName to IR.

Do you want to retry or cancel the job?



If you ignore the error message, the document prints as expected.

CAUSE

This problem may occur in situations when the print spooler does not communicate correctly with the infrared port. This is known to occur when you print to the following printers over an infrared port after you apply Windows 2000 SP3:

Canon BJC-85 Portable Color Bubble Jet Printer
HP DeskJet 340 Portable Personal Printer


RESOLUTION

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to computers that are experiencing this specific problem. This fix may receive additional testing. STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 4.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, specify that documents print directly to the printer. To do so:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Printers.
  2. Right-click the printer, and then click Properties.
  3. Click the Advanced tab.
  4. Click Print directly to the printer, and then click OK.
