SYMPTOMS

When you install the VERITAS NetBackup 4.5 backup program, it does not detect your tape drive during the device configuration portion of Setup. When it scans for installed devices, you receive a result of "No devices detected".

CAUSE

This issue occurs because the VERITAS NetBackup program tries to send a request to the logical unit number (LUN) of the tape device and have it forwarded to the storage adapter (typically, a SCSI adapter), instead of sending the request directly to the storage adapter that enumerates the tape device. In Windows Server 2003, this privileged call by the NetBackup program is denied.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, contact VERITAS to obtain a possible update for the NetBackup 4.5 program. For information about how to obtain support for your VERITAS product, visit the following Web site:

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

MORE INFORMATION

In earlier versions of Windows, if a program sent a request to the LUN of a device, the device would forward the request to its adapter. Because the adapter and the LUN have different security permissions (the adapter has administrator-only permissions), this behavior permits a user or program with restricted access to the computer to make a privileged call to the storage adapter.
