You Cannot Log On to Secure Web Page After You Install the August 22, 2002 Cumulative Patch for Internet Explorer

SYMPTOMS

When you visit a Web site that contains both secure (https) and non-secure (http) Web pages, and you try to log on to a secure Web page, the Logon dialog box does not appear and you cannot type your user name and password. You may be redirected to a blank gray page.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if both of the following conditions are true:

  • Your Web pages are displayed in frames.
  • You install the cumulative patch for Microsoft Internet Explorer dated August 22, 2002.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Internet Explorer 5.5 service pack that contains this hotfix.
