You cannot create patches that have sequence numbers larger than 32767 when you use the MakeCab.exe utility that is included with the Platform Software Development Kit

Article ID: 815483

Article Last Modified on 11/15/2007

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft COM+ 2.0 Standard Edition, when used with:
    • Microsoft Windows XP Professional

SYMPTOMS

The MakeCab.exe utility that is included with the Microsoft Platform Software Development Kit may lose content when you make a .cab file. The Makecab.exe utility is located in the following folder:

Drive:\Program Files\Microsoft SDK\Samples\SysMgmt\msi\Patching

CAUSE

The Makecab.exe utility generates a .cab file that is missing some files even though the directives (.ddf) file that is used to create the .cab file is correct. The patchwiz object may not find the sequence number in the NewSequenceNums table when the following conditions are true:

  • You create a patch by using the Patchwiz.dll.
  • You use sequence numbers that are larger than 32767.

This process creates an incorrect .ddf file and an incorrect .cab file.
