SYMPTOMS
When you access a Web Folder on a computer configured with either Microsoft Office XP or the client components for Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server 2001, you may receive one of the following error messages if the folder is behind a firewall or proxy server, and proxy authentication is required:

When you open documents directly from Office XP (instead of opening them from My Network Places or the Web Folder shell extension), you may not see the problem right away, but when you prepare to save the file, or when you reopen the file after you close it, you may see one of these error messages.
CAUSE
The Distributed Authoring and Versioning (DAV) protocol provider for the Microsoft Data Access Internet Publishing Provider (MSDAIPP) does not perform authentication when it receives a 407 Proxy Authentication response from a proxy server. MSDAIPP is used by Office XP and the shell namespace extension installed by the SharePoint client, and the problem can affect your ability to connect to certain Web servers.
RESOLUTION
Hotfix information
This problem was first fixed in a hotfix that is now contained in a service pack. If you have installed SharePoint Portal Server 2001 Service Pack 3 or a later service pack, you do not have to apply the hotfix.
