  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional Edition

SYMPTOMS

When you edit a global security profile template and then change the service startup mode and then try to save the security profile template, you may receive the following error message:

Failed to save Template_name.inf

CAUSE

This problem occurs if the security profile template that you are trying to edit on a Windows 2000-based computer has been previously edited on a computer that is running Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1). In Windows XP, you can specify a service startup mode without using a security descriptor. This is not permitted in Windows 2000, and you cannot add a security descriptor to the security profile template by editing it in Windows 2000. The error will still occur.

A security descriptor is an attribute in the file system of NTFS-formatted drives that defines which users and groups have access to files and folders and what type of access they have.
