APPLIES TO
- Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Standard Edition
- Microsoft Exchange 2000 Enterprise Server
SYMPTOMS
When you try to create a Site Replication Service (SRS) on an Exchange 2000 Server computer, you may receive an error message similar to the following:
CAUSE
This behavior may occur if the Exchange 2000 Server computer that you want to create a Site Replication Service on is a member of an administrative group that has no Microsoft Exchange 5.5 Server computers as members. In this situation, an SRS for that administrative group already exists.
RESOLUTION
Create the SRS in an administrative group that contains one or more Exchange 5.5 Server computers. For additional information about how to create an additional SRS in a mixed site, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

MORE INFORMATION
An administrative group in a mixed site that contains only Exchange 2000 Server computers is already serviced by an existing SRS. In this situation, you cannot manually create an SRS in an administrative group that does not contain one or more Exchange 5.5 Server computers. If you manually create an additional SRS, replication conflicts can occur with the existing SRS.
Site Replication Service emulates an Exchange 5.5 directory service and provides directory interoperability between Exchange 5.5 Server and Exchange 2000 Server. SRS is automatically installed on the first Exchange 2000 Server computer that joins an Exchange 5.5 site and is used to communicate to Exchange 5.5 Server computers in the same site or in a different site. SRS provides support for versions of Exchange Server earlier than Exchange 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
