SYMPTOMS
When you open a Microsoft Word 97 document in Microsoft Word 2002 or in Microsoft Office Word 2003, numbered lists may not appear as indented.
CAUSE
This problem occurs because the values for the NumberPosition properties, TextPosition properties or the TabPosition properties are not maintained when you open the Word 97 document in Word 2002 or in Word 2003.
RESOLUTION

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.
To resolve this problem in Word 2003, add the following registry key. The fix is included in the initial release of Word 2003. Therefore, there is no hotfix to download for Word 2003.
- Quit Microsoft Word
- Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
- Locate and then click the following registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Word\Options
- On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD value.
- Type FavorWord97ListIndents to name the new value, and then press ENTER.
- Right-click FavorWord97ListIndents, and then click Modify.
- In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
- Quit Registry Editor.

After the hotfix is installed, the English version of this fix has the file attributes (or later) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.

After you install this fix, follow the steps that are listed later in this section of this article to set the FavorWord97ListIndents registry key and to turn on the fix.
How to Enable the Hotfix by Using the FavorWord97ListIndents Registry Key
To turn on the product fix listed in this article, enter the following registry key and value.

- Quit Microsoft Word if Word is running.
- Click Start, and then click Run.
- In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
- Locate and then select the following registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Word\Options
- On the Edit menu, click New, and then click DWORD value.
- Type FavorWord97ListIndents for the new value.
- Press the ENTER key.
- Right-click the FavorWord97ListIndents registry key, and then click Modify.
- In the Value data box, type 1.
- Click OK, and then quit Registry Editor.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section. This problem was first corrected in Office XP Service Pack 3.
MORE INFORMATION
In Word 97, you can set the indent by using the Bullets and Numbering dialog box or, for example, by using the following line of code:
ActiveDocument.ListTemplates(1).ListLevels(1).NumberPosition =InchesToPoints(0.5)
For Word 97 documents, you can save the file, reopen the file, and see that the NumberPosition value is retained.
When you open these documents in Word 2002 or in Word 2003, the indents do not appear and the NumberPosition value is not retained.
