APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Standard Edition, when used with:
    • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
    • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server

SYMPTOMS

When you try to enable wireless access to a domain for a user, you receive the following error message:

Appropriate rights to the user's Exchange mailbox could not be set. If you wish to enable wireless mailbox access for this user, verify that you have Exchange Administrative privileges and try again.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if the wireless user access is enabled in one domain, and the user's Microsoft Exchange mailbox is in another domain.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, you must create a two-way trust relationship between the two domains.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a bug in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

In a Windows 2000 network, there is transitive trust between all domains in the same forest and you do not have to add explicit trusts. However, wireless enabled users are not recognized in a transitive trust between domains. If you enable wireless access on one domain, and the Exchange mailbox is on another domain, there is not an implicit trust between the wireless account and the mailbox domain.
