XCCC: Error Message When Sending Instant Message "Signing In to Microsoft Exchange Instant Messaging Failed Because the Service Is Unavailable"

SYMPTOMS

When you try to start an Instant Messaging session, you may receive the following error message:

Signing in to Microsoft Exchange Instant Messaging failed because the service is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later.

When you view the Application Log in the Event Viewer, the following event is logged: Event Type: Error
Event Source: MSExchangeIM
Event Category: Network Layer
Event ID: 28674
User: N/A
Description: The network layer could not be initialized (Error c004080e).


CAUSE

This issue occurs because of an entry that is not valid in the Lost and Found container in the Active Directory directory service.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, you must remove the entry that is not valid from the Active Directory by using ADSI Edit. To do so, follow these steps:

Warning If you use the ADSI Edit snap-in, the LDP utility, or any other LDAP version 3 client, and you incorrectly modify the attributes of Active Directory objects, you can cause serious problems. These problems may require you to reinstall Microsoft Windows 2000 Server, Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server, or both. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems that occur if you incorrectly modify Active Directory object attributes can be solved. Modify these attributes at your own risk.
Note ADSI Edit is a tool that is provided with the Windows 2000 Support tools.

  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Windows 2000 Support Tools, point to Tools, and then click ADSI Edit.
  2. In the left pane, double-click the Configuration Container.
  3. In the left pane, double-click the Configuration object, and then double-click LostAndFoundConfig.
  4. In the right pane, delete any value that contains the name of your Instant Messaging server.
  5. In the right pane, delete any value that references the RVP Service.
  6. Quit ADSI Edit.
