SYMPTOMS
You cannot start or reinstall Excel on your computer. For example, you may experience one or both of the following issues:
- When you try to start Excel, you receive an error message similar to one of the following:
- When you run Microsoft Office Setup to reinstall Excel, you receive an error message similar to the following:
Additionally, the Excel.exe and Graph9.exe files on your hard disk are renamed as Excel.exe.vir and Graph9.exe.vir.
CAUSE
These issues may occur if your computer is infected with the W32/Insane.dam virus.
The W32/Insane.dam virus generates a hoax report on computers that are running McAfee antivirus software (for example, McAfee VirusScan) in which the .dat files and scan engines are outdated. The McAfee antivirus program reports executable (.exe) files as infected and renames these files as Filename
.exe.vir, where Filename
is the name of the executable file for the program -- for example, Excel.exe.vir.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, update your McAfee antivirus program to use the latest scan engine that can detect files that are corrupted by the W32/Insane.dam virus. Then, rename Excel.exe.vir and Graph9.exe.vir as Excel.exe and Graph9.exe. For more information about how to do this, visit the following McAfee Web site:
