This step-by-step article describes how to export the Outlook Express Address Book to use as a mail merge data source in Word.

Note The Outlook Express Address Book is not designed for use with Word.

When you try to perform a mail merge with the Outlook Express Address Book, either it is not available for use in the mail merge, or you receive an error message similar to one of the following:

Logon failed. You must log on to Microsoft Exchange to access your address book.

Error code: Unspecified error

How to Use the Outlook Express Address Book in a Mail Merge

To use the Outlook Express Address Book as a mail merge data source in Word, you must export it. To export the Address Book from Outlook Express, follow these steps:

  1. Start Outlook Express.
  2. On the File menu, point to Export, and then click Address Book.
  3. In the Address Book Export Tool dialog box, click Text File (Comma Separated Values), and then click Export.
  4. In the Save exported file as box, type a file name for your exported Address Book file, and then click Browse.
  5. In the Save in field of the Save As dialog box, specify a location in which to save the file.
  6. In the Save as type box, click either Comma Separated Values (*.csv) or Text Files (*.txt) (as appropriate to the format that you want to use), and then click Save.


Note: You can save your Outlook Express Address Book in either Comma Separated Values (*.csv) or Text Files (*.txt) format. Word can use either format.

  1. Click Next.
  2. Click to select the check boxes next to the fields that you want to export, and then click Finish.
  3. Click OK when you receive the message that the export procedure is completed.
  4. Click Close to close the Address Book Export Tool dialog box.
