SYMPTOMS

When you try to log on to a File Transfer Protocol (FTP) site that is hosted by Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) 5.0, you receive an error message that is similar to the following:

530 User \username cannot log in.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when the following conditions are true:

  • You try to log on by using "\username" and a password. You use "\" to indicate that a local domain or a trusted domain is not supported.
  • You install the hotfix that is mentioned in the following article:

  • You install Microsoft Windows 2000 Security Roll Up Package 1 that is mentioned in the following article:

  • You install Windows 2000 Service Pack 3.


RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, install Windows 2000 Service Pack 4. Alternatively, you can apply the hotfix that is mentioned in this section.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Microsoft Windows Server 2003 service pack that contains this hotfix.
