  • Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2002 Professional Edition

SYMPTOMS

When you run an application that uses the Microsoft .NET Framework Data Provider for ODBC, you may receive an exception error message, and your application may stop responding.

CAUSE

If the ODBC data provider raises an exception, the ODBC manager may leak a SpinLock object in the common language runtime. This causes high CPU utilization because one or more threads are involved in an endless loop. This causes your application to stop responding.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Microsoft .NET ODBC data provider service pack that contains this hotfix.

To resolve this problem immediately, contact Microsoft Product Support Services to obtain the hotfix. For a complete list of Microsoft Product Support Services telephone numbers and information about support costs, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

Note In special cases, charges that are ordinarily incurred for support calls may be canceled if a Microsoft Support Professional determines that a specific update will resolve your problem. The usual support costs will apply to additional support questions and issues that do not qualify for the specific update in question.

Prerequisites

To install this hotfix, you must have the Microsoft .NET Framework 1.0 Service Pack 2 or later and the Microsoft .NET Framework Data Provider for ODBC installed on your computer.

Restart requirement

You do not have to restart your computer after you apply this hotfix. The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in coordinated universal time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. --------------------------------------------------------
  03-Dec-2002 15:44 6.0.2600.0 365,568 811135-odbc_net-enu.exe

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a bug in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section of this article. This fix is scheduled to be included with a service pack for the Microsoft .NET Framework Data Provider for ODBC.

MORE INFORMATION

This hotfix is currently available only for Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, Microsoft Windows 2000, and Microsoft Windows XP. This hotfix changes the Microsoft.Data.ODBC.dll assembly on your computer. Additionally, this hotfix also installs an additional copy of the Gacutil tool and the Microsoft Visual C++ .NET runtime library. These copies are installed so that you can install this hotfix on computers that have the common language runtime installed, but that do not have Microsoft Visual Studio .NET installed. You can remove these files after you install the hotfix.
