301378 How to Obtain the Latest Exchange 2000 Server Service Pack

Microsoft Exchange Server 2003

Follow the instructions that are in the "More Information" section of this article to turn on the journaling feature.

MORE INFORMATION

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk. After you download this hotfix, you can journal messages and preserve the Bcc information of the message. By default, this feature is turned off. To turn on the journaling feature, add the following registry key on the server:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchangeTransport\Parameters

After you have added the Parameters registry key, add the following registry key and values:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchangeTransport\Parameters\JournalBCC
Key name: JournalBCC
Data type: Dword
Data value: 1

The Exchange SMTP Service and the Information Store service must be restarted before this registry key is considered valid.

There are two known issues with this fix that are addressed in Exchange Server 2003:

  • When you view the journaled message, the Bcc: line also contains the To: and Cc: line recipients. Third-party vendors who write journaling products are aware of this and are developing a workaround for this problem.
  • If the journaled message has a double-byte character set (DBCS) display name, that information appears incorrectly on the Bcc: line.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
