256986 Description of the Microsoft Windows Registry

SYMPTOMS

If you run both the Systems Management Server (SMS) SNMP extension agent (Snmpelea.dll) and the Microsoft Windows NT SNMP extension agent (Evntagnt.dll) spurious events may be recorded. These events include:

Event 1025 - Unable to load PrimaryModule Application. LoadLibrary returned 126.

Event 6002 - Mutex object could not be released. Reason code is 288. Trap may not be sent.

These events do not affect the operation of either extension agent, but may cause unnecessary alerts to be triggered if monitoring for errors is occurring.

CAUSE

Event 6002 occurs because the SMS SNMP extension agent and the Windows NT SNMP extension agent share a mutex. Both agents use the same named mutex and both agents serve the same purpose.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. MORE INFORMATION

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk. To prevent the 6002 events, disable one of the extension agents.

To disable the Windows NT SNMP agent, change the following key to refer to Snmpelea.dll (the SMS SNMP extension agent) instead of Evntagnt.dll:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SNMP_EVENTS\CurrentVersion\Pathname

After you make this change, stop and restart the SNMP service to prevent additional 6002 events.

Note You must disable one of the agents to prevent the 6002 events, whether or not you use the hotfix that is described in this article.
