SUMMARY

The error message

Cannot find file or file already open

will occur when starting Works if a file that is part of a saved workspace has been deleted, renamed, moved to another directory, or has already been opened.

MORE INFORMATION

The Saved Workspace feature of Works allows you to open frequently used files quickly. Just open a document once, save your workspace, and Works automatically opens that document every time you start Works. However, this may cause the error mentioned above if the file is later moved or deleted.

There are three ways to prevent the error message from appearing every time you start Works. You can rebuild the saved workspace, clear the saved workspace or disable saved workspace.

To Rebuild the Saved Workspace

  1. Open all the files that you want to be part of the Saved Workspace.
  2. From the File menu, choose Save Workspace.

To Clear the Saved Workspace

  1. Close all files. If you are using Works 3.0x, this should take you to the Startup dialog box. Click Cancel on the Startup dialog.
  2. From the File menu, choose Save Workspace.

NOTE: If you are using Works 2.0x, and you want the Startup dialog to appear when you start Works, from Options menu choose Works Settings. Select Show Startup Dialog and choose OK.

To Disable the Saved Workspace

  1. Works 2.x: From the Options menu, choose Works Settings.

Works 3.x: From the Tools menu, choose Options.

  1. Clear the Use Saved Workspace check box. Choose OK.
