SUMMARY

If you import an Encapsulated PostScript (EPS) file created by Generic CADD version 5.0 into Word for DOS using the Library Link Graphics command (Word 5.0) or Insert Picture command (Word 5.5), Word does not recognize the file as an EPS file. Instead, Word proposes PostScript as the file format.

This occurs because the first line, or header, of a Generic CADD EPS file consists of the following:

%!PS-Adobe-#.# EPSF-#.#

According to Adobe’s EPS specification, applications such as Word for DOS have the option of interpreting a file that begins with this header as a PostScript language file, and not a DOS EPS file.

Note: Do not attempt to manually enter “EPS” in the File Format field if you link a Generic CADD EPS file into a Word document. Unpredictable results can occur if Word attempts to preview or print the document that contains the Generic CADD EPS file.

Instead, you should leave the file format as PostScript. You cannot preview the graphic image, but it does print correctly to a PostScript printer.

MORE INFORMATION

A PostScript file cannot be previewed from within Word. PostScript files can be printed on a PostScript printer from Word if using the PostScript printer driver, POSTSCRP.PRD.

A DOS EPS graphic file by definition must contain a binary header (29 bytes in length) that Word identifies by examining the first 3 bytes of the file.
