Word 5.5: Hangs with IBMQUIET.PRD Selected

PSS ID Number: Q71185 Article last modified on 11-02-1994

5.50

MS-DOS

The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Word for MS-DOS, version 5.5

SUMMARY

Microsoft Word for MS-DOS version 5.5 will hang on a computer system if the IBMQUIET.PRD printer driver is currently selected from the File Printer Setup dialog box and you attempt to select “IBM Quietwriter I” from the Printer Name list box.

Note: This problem does not occur in Microsoft Word for MS-DOS 6.0.

MORE INFORMATION

Word 5.0

This problem can be prevented by modifying the IBMQUIET.PRD printer driver. To modify IBMQUIET.PRD, do the following:

  1. Convert IBMQUIET.PRD from a binary file to a text file using the MakePRD.EXE conversion utility. Change to the directory where Word 5.50 has been installed on disk, and enter the following command

    makeprd /t ibmquiet.prd ibmquiet.doc

When MakePRD.EXE has finished converting the printer driver, the message “conversion complete” will display.

  2. Start Word with IBMQUIET.DOC loaded by entering

    word ibmquiet.doc

  3. From the Edit menu, choose Search, and enter “GraphicsNotSupported:0 1” (without the quotation marks) in the “Text to Search for:” text box.

  4. The Word cursor is now located within the model block for the IBM Quietwriter I, on a line that reads:

    GraphicsNotSupported:0 1

change this line so that it reads:

    GraphicsNotSupported:0

  5. Save the file as text-only using the File Save command.

  6. Convert IBMQUIET.DOC back into a binary PRD file using the MakePRD.EXE conversion utility. If running Word under the OS/2 operating environment, MakePRD.EXE must be run from the MS-DOS compatibility box.

    makeprd /p ibmquiet.prd ibmquiet.doc

The modified IBMQUIET.PRD printer driver can now be used in Word 5.50, and will allow you to select “IBM Quietwriter I” in the Printer Name list box.

Note: The IBM Quietwriter I does not support graphics printing. This modification to IBMQUIET.PRD will cause Word 5.5 to display “120 dpi” in the Graphics Resolution list box in the File Printer Setup dialog box; however, it does not enable graphics printing for the Quietwriter I. Do not attempt to print graphics with IBM Quietwriter I selected in the Printer Name list box.
