Summary:

There are two ways to obtain the Harvard Graphics Translator. The HG Translator is bundled with all packages of PowerPoint for Windows shipped after April 4, 1991. The translator is also available as a standalone product from Microsoft Sales and Service by calling (800) 426-9400. The steps for installation differ, depending on whether the Harvard Graphics Translator is bundled or is received separately.

More Information:

Procedure to Install the Standalone HG Translator

The files on the standalone Harvard Graphics Translator disk are not compressed. To install them, you merely copy them to the PowerPoint directory on your hard drive. To do this, perform the following steps:

  1. At the DOS prompt, use the Cd command to change to the hard drive directory where PowerPoint for Windows is currently installed. For example:

    cd powerpnt

  2. Insert the Microsoft HG Translator disk into the disk drive, and use the Copy command to copy all of the files from the disk to the PowerPoint directory on the hard drive. For example:

    copy a:. c:

This will copy the translator file and four sample files into your PowerPoint directory. The translator must be installed in the same directory as PowerPoint for Windows, but the demonstration files may be copied or moved to a different location.

  3. The next step is to create the Program Manager icon with which you can start the Harvard Graphics Translator. To build the icon, perform the following steps:

    1. Start Microsoft Windows. In the Program Manager, activate the group in which you would like to place the HG Translator icon.

    2. From the File menu, choose New. The New Program Object Item dialog box appears with Program Item selected. Choose OK.

    3. The Program Item Properties dialog box appears. Choose Browse.

    4. In the Browse dialog box, click to select the file HG2POWER.EXE from your PowerPoint directory and choose OK.

    5. The Program Item Properties dialog box reappears. In the description field, type

      hg translator

and click OK. Your new icon for the Harvard Graphics translator will appear.

Procedure to Install HG Translator Bundled with PowerPoint 2.00

If you install PowerPoint 2.00 with the Install With Defaults option chosen, the Harvard Graphics Translator will automatically be installed along with the rest of the default program files. If you did not initially choose this option and now want to install the translator, perform the following steps:

  1. Start Microsoft Windows 3.00 in standard or enhanced mode.

  2. From the File menu, choose Run and type the following in the Command Line field:

    a:setup

  3. Choose the Install PowerPoint Using Options button when it appears.

  4. When prompted, enter the name of the directory in which you have already installed the other PowerPoint files.

  5. When the listing of available options appears, choose the Install HG Translator option.

  6. PowerPoint will install the files selected and create any necessary icons for you.

Note that the HG Translator requires a minimum of 2mb of system RAM to operate properly.
