SUMMARY
The following information outlines the procedure for adding whole numbers containing commas when using Microsoft Word’s Print Merge feature. The field separator for the data document (the file with the data for the Print Merge) should be a tab and the decimal separator should be a comma (not a period, which is the default).
In Word versions 5.5, 6.0, from the Tools menu, choose Customize to change the decimal field separator to a comma (,).
In Word versions 4.0 and 5.0, from the Options menu, change the Decimal Character under General Options to a comma (,) instead of a period.
Example Data Document
Field1 (TAB) Field2
5,200 (TAB) 2,200
(TAB) - indicates that the TAB key was pressed for the field separator
Example Main Document
<<Field1 + Field2>>
<< (left chevron) is produced by pressing CTRL+[ (left bracket) >> (right chevron) is produced by pressing CTRL+] (right bracket)
When the Print Merge is performed, the result of adding Field1 and Field2 will be 7,400. By having the decimal separator defined as a comma, Word will not consider the commas in the numbers as field separators for the Print Merge.
