The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Word for Windows versions 1.0, 1.1, and 1.1a

Summary:

The following is a history of graphics file size limitations for Word for Windows versions 1.0, 1.1, and 1.1a.

More Information:

Word for Windows 1.0 does not import a graphics file that requires a metafile (rendered in memory during import) larger than 64K, regardless of the version of the active Windows platform. This limitation is a design function of Word for Windows 1.0, and is not directly related to the original file size of the graphic to be imported.

In Windows versions 2.0, 2.03, 2.1, and 2.11, the Clipboard has a memory limitation of 64K bytes. The Word for Windows function that imports graphics uses the same Windows function that takes graphics off the Clipboard. Due to the Windows 2.x Clipboard limitation, this same limit is enforced for all versions of Word for Windows when running on the Windows 2.x platform.

With Windows 3.0, the Clipboard’s 64K memory limit has been removed and Word for Windows versions 1.1 and 1.1a are no longer bound by this limit for imported graphics when running on the 3.0 platform.

Exceptions in Word for Windows 1.1a include the import of Windows metafiles and TIFF images. Imported Windows metafiles are still limited to a maximum size of 64K, and color TIFF images are limited to a maximum size of approximately 1 MB.
