System Hangs When Selecting Printer Setup in PowerPoint PSS ID Number: Q71092 Article last modified on 09-17-1991 PSS database name: W_PowerPt

2.00

WINDOWS

Summary:

The system may hang when you choose Printer Setup from the File menu in Windows PowerPoint 2.00. This may occur if there is an invalid entry in the [devices] section of the WIN.INI file.

More Information:

PowerPoint may give unexpected results if the [devices] section of the WIN.INI has been altered and no longer follows this syntax:

<device-name>=<driver-name>, <port-name>

The following is an example of an invalid entry that may cause the system to hang when you choose Printer Setup from the File menu in PowerPoint:

PCL / HP LaserJet=

The lines in the [devices] sections should look like the following example:

PCL / HP LaserJet=HPPCL,LPT1:

Note: Take care when using a text editor to make changes to your WIN.INI file. Incorrect changes to the WIN.INI file can lead to undesirable results when you run Windows. In addition, some editors can damage certain characters (those with ANSI values of greater than 127). If it is necessary for you to edit the WIN.INI file using a text editor, Notepad is the recommended choice.

Most of the settings in the WIN.INI file can be changed by using the Control Panel. This minimizes the possibility of making mistakes that can cause invalid entries.

Always back up your WIN.INI file before you open it.
