Word 5.5: Paragraph Formatting Not Saved with Glossary Item

PSS ID Number: Q71086 Article last modified on 11-02-1994

5.50

MS-DOS

SUMMARY

Glossary items that include paragraph formatting (such as borders and paragraph alignment) do not retain the paragraph formatting if you save the glossary when you are prompted to save changes when you exit Version 5.5 of Microsoft Word for MS-DOS. If you explicitly save the glossary file by choosing Glossary from the Edit menu and choosing Save Glossary, the paragraph formatting will be saved with the glossary item.

MORE INFORMATION

The glossary item formatting is remembered for the duration of the current session of Word (that is, the session in which you create the glossary item); however, if you exit Word and choose “Yes” when prompted to save the glossary, the paragraph formatting will not be retained for the next session of Word. To retain the paragraph formatting in the glossary item between Word sessions, the glossary must be explicitly saved during the session in which you create the glossary item.

Steps to Reproduce Problem

  1. Create a centered paragraph with a border box around the text (use the Format Paragraph Borders command).
  2. Select or highlight the paragraph.
  3. From the Edit menu, choose Glossary.
  4. In the Glossary dialog box, choose Define, and assign the glossary item a name.
  5. In the Word editing screen, type the glossary item name and press F3. The paragraph will appear as when first created.
  6. From the File menu, choose Exit and select “Yes” when prompted to save changes to glossary.
  7. Restart Word, type the glossary item name, and press F3. The paragraph will appear left aligned and with no border.

To work around this problem, choose Glossary from the Edit menu, select the newly created glossary item, then choose Save Glossary BEFORE you exit Word.

Microsoft is researching this problem and will post new information here as it becomes available.
