MacWord File Conversion Limitations in WinWord 1.1 PSS ID Number: Q71083 Article last modified on 08-08-1993 PSS database name: APpsConV

1.10

WINDOWS

Summary:

The following are limitations of file conversions between version 1.1 of Microsoft Word for Windows and versions 1.0 through 4.0 of Microsoft Word for the Macintosh with the Word for the Macintosh file converter CONV-MCW.DLL.

Conversion to and from Word for the Macintosh affects the following Word for Windows features:

Character Formatting

  • All Caps character formatting is converted to Normal text in a Word for Windows document.
  • Outline and Shadow formatting is lost.
  • Dotted Underlines are displayed dotted in Word for Windows but print as solid underlines.
  • Black color formatting is changed to Auto in Word for Windows.

Paragraph Formatting

  • Tabs are limited to a precision of 1/100th of an inch in Word for Windows.
  • Dotted line and Hairline borders in Microsoft Word for the Macintosh become single line borders in Microsoft Word for Windows.
  • All Shadow border information is lost.

Footnotes

  • Microsoft Word for the Macintosh does not support restarting the footnote numbering sequence for each section. Footnotes in a Word for Windows document, where the footnote numbering restarts at 1 in each section, are converted to footnotes where numbering restarts at 1 on each page. Footnotes in a Word for the Macintosh document, where footnote numbering restarts at 1 on each page, are converted to footnotes where numbering restarts at 1 for each section.

For current conversion issues between version 2.0 of Word for Windows and versions 4.0 and 5.0 of Word for the Macintosh, refer to the CONVINFO.DOC file, which is located in the Word for Windows program directory (usually C:) in 2.0a version of Word for Windows.
